Florida driver receives a vehicular homicide conviction

It would be wonderful if a person's bad decisions did not result in any collateral damage. However, as nearly everyone understands, this is not the case in most situations. When a person decides to drive in a reckless and negligent manner, it is bound to affect other individuals.

This happened earlier this year in Escambia County when a man chose to flee from the police during a simple traffic stop. The collateral damage in this case resulted in the death of a 78-year-old woman and injuries to several other people.

This week, the driver in this case, a 23-year-old Pensacola man, received a vehicular manslaughter conviction. He was also convicted on several other charges including: leaving an accident scene; fleeing law enforcement and causing a crash-related death; resisting a police officer and driving on a suspended license.

Reportedly, a police officer saw the defendant roll through a stop sign. When the officer tried to stop the car, the driver accelerated and swerved through traffic. Even though the police officer chose not to pursue the driver, the defendant continued driving at a high rate of speed until he crashed into another vehicle. A 78-year-old occupant of the other vehicle died two days later and other occupants suffered serious injuries.

After the car accident, the defendant left the roadway. He crashed into a fence, a swing set and four people before overturning his vehicle. Three of these people, including a small child, suffered minor injuries while the fourth person suffered serious injuries.

Obviously, this car accident caused by negligence, recklessness and illegal driving behavior resulted in a lot of collateral damage. Victims like these can use the law to hold responsible parties to account for their actions behind the wheel.
