More distraction leads to more pedestrian deaths

Florida readers know that distracted driving is a major problem, and it is currently one of the leading reasons for car accidents. Passengers and drivers, however, are not the only people affected by this type of irresponsible behavior. Studies show that there is a dramatic increase in the overall numbers of pedestrian accidents, likely as a result of distracted driving.

More and more people are walking as a mode of transportation now, some for health and environmental purposes, and others because it is cheaper or easier. While there are many benefits to walking, there is also ample evidence that it is actually becoming more dangerous.

Concerning statistics

According to a study released by the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian accidents are up by at least 11 percent. This is dramatic jump, meaning that approximately 6,000 people suffer fatal injuries in pedestrian accidents every year. While cars are getting safer and more technologically advanced, pedestrians are dying at an alarming rate. The following are a few reasons why this may be happening:

  • Economic factors, such as lower gas prices, mean that there are currently more drivers on the road at this time.
  • Drivers are more distracted than ever before, by both their phones and their in-car features.
  • Distraction is behind only failure to properly yield and speeding drivers in the leading causes of pedestrian deaths.

Drivers are not the only individuals who may be distracted. Many pedestrians often walk while looking at their phones, which could lead to more accidents, severe injuries and more deaths.

Speeding is still one of the leading reasons for pedestrian accidents. It is particularly dangerous in combination with a distracted driver, and even a low-speed impact can have catastrophic results for a pedestrian. The higher the speed at impact, the more likely that a pedestrian will suffer fatal injuries.

Injured pedestrians, injured motorists

No one is immune to the risks presented by distracted driver. Whether it is a pedestrian crossing the street or a driver hurt by another who was not paying attention, any victim of this type of negligent behavior has the right to a full and fair recovery.

No matter the circumstances of your accident, if you suffered the negative impact of distraction, you may have a rightful claim to financial compensation through a personal injury claim. You can learn more about this option by seeking a complete evaluation of your case and explanation of your options as soon as possible after an accident.
