Medical malpractice and infection after plastic surgery

It is not common for serious infections to happen after a plastic surgery operation. However, in plastic surgery operations, it is even more vital to prevent an infection, because when an infection does occur, it can have a negative effect on the end result of the surgery and the way that it looks. That defeats the objective of the surgery in the first place.

Although rare, surgical site infections (SSI) are one of the most common types of infections; the second most common in fact. SSI is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as any type of infection that occurs around the area of a surgical incision. If this occurs within 30 days of the surgery, or in the case of prosthetic material being inserted, if it occurs within one year, then it is defined as an SSI infection.

SSI infections are related to the amount of time spent in the hospital, but there also several other prevention techniques that, if implemented fully, could reduce SSI infections by up to 35 percent. If a wound that is otherwise clean becomes infected, many plastic surgery patients file medical malpractice lawsuits against their surgeons, and this is often successful.

There has been an increasing trend in the success of medical malpractice claims in the years between 2010 and 2015. Local clinics were the most accused of medical malpractice.

Suffering an infection in plastic surgery can be devastating since it can affect the final result. It can also cause a great deal of pain and suffering. If you have been negatively affected by plastic surgery infections, you should consider your options in claiming damages.
