Gallbladder removal: What are common side effects?

Gallbladder surgery is commonly performed and generally a safe procedure. In the surgery, the gallbladder is removed to prevent any complications arising in the body.

However, there is some possibility for surgical error in gallbladder surgery, and if this happens, patients should look into their options for making a legal claim under medical malpractice.

This blog will offer a brief overview into some of the most common side effects of gallbladder surgery that are mostly safe and normal, but are good to be aware of.

Side affects from the absence of the gallbladder

When the gallbladder is no longer present in the body, it can cause digestive problems such as diarrhea. This is because the gallbladder usually holds the bile produced by the liver. When the gallbladder is no longer present, the bile moves directly from the liver to the small intestine. This is not usually a problem, but right after surgery, the body might take some time to get used to the change.

What can I expect right after surgery?

Immediately after surgery, you are usually required to ingest only clear liquids. This is because the anaesthesia given before the surgery can lead to bouts of nausea and vomiting. This is likely to be accompanied by fatigue.

What can I expect in the long run?

Almost 60 percent of people that go through gallbladder removal surgery do not experience any symptoms. However, some long-term side effects may include diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome and phantom pain associated with the removal of the organ.
