Understanding how and when to swerve

You don't want to be involved in a car accident, and you don't trust other drivers. You're constantly worried that someone else is going to make a mistake and put you in the hospital.

One thing you're always thinking about is what you should do when a crash is coming. Do you just hammer the brakes? Do you swerve around the accident? What is the safest reaction?

You can't always stop in time to avoid an accident. In some cases, swerving can keep you out of the crash. For instance, if you're coming up behind a chain-reaction crash and there's an empty driving lane to your left, quickly switching into it can keep you from piling into the accident.

However, be very careful. Situational awareness is critical so that you know you're not just swerving into oncoming traffic or an even worse accident.

Additionally, understand what you're going to hit and what your car is designed for. Most safety systems are designed around front-end accidents. Swerving may lead to a different and more dangerous wreck.

For example, one woman was driving on the interstate when a pair of cars and a semi truck all started swerving to avoid an obstacle in the road. She couldn't see it, but she watched those vehicles sail out of control. She decide that was too dangerous and just drove straight, trying to slow down.

It was a plastic cooler. She hit it and everyone in her car was fine. Spinning off the road would likely have been vastly more dangerous.

When someone else causes an accident that you cannot avoid, be sure you know what legal options you have to seek financial compensation to cover medical treatment and other damages.
