Do doctors do surgery when it isn't needed?

Surgery isn't something to take lightly. When your doctor recommends it, you think it's for a solid reason. You may think you have no other choice.

That's not always true, according to some reports. One claimed that tens of thousands of annual surgeries are advised, scheduled and carried out when they're completely unneeded.

For example, a minor-league baseball player was told that he needed a pacemaker after having some heart issues. He was nervous for his life and says he just accepted what his doctor said. However, other medical professionals have now said that the surgery wasn't necessary, that he really just needed some medication to help him control his blood pressure and that he can stop using the pacemaker.

The kicker, though, is that the surgery meant his young baseball career was cut short. He said that the game was his life and that the doctor who told him to have the procedure done took it away.

Though all unnecessary surgeries won't have that drastic of an impact on someone's life, they are more common than many people realize. Some who studied the numbers have suggested that certain parts of the profession may see as many as 10 percent to 20 percent of annual surgeries carried out when they're not strictly needed.

If this happens to you, even if it doesn't ruin your career, it can still leave you with high medical bills, and you'll possibly have been exposed to an unnecessary risk. It's important to know if you have a right to financial compensation for mistakes that doctors make.
