4 reasons even good doctors make mistakes

If you're involved in a medical malpractice case, it may be easy to assume that the doctor didn't care. After all, if he or she had been more vigilant and caring, couldn't the mistakes have been avoided?

While this may be true in some cases, the reality is that many good doctors, who do care, still make mistakes. Here are four reasons why:

1. Doctors are tired.

They work long hours. Many work through the night. Car accidents and heart attacks don't wait for a schedule. A tired doctor at 4 a.m. may do all he or she can do, but mistakes happen.

2. Doctors have mental disorders.

Some reports claim that no other profession sees the same rates of addiction, depression and even suicide. Clearly, the job takes a toll. Your doctor could be struggling with all sorts of very real issues.

3. Doctors know they have zero margin for error.

This isn't a profession where mistakes can always be easily fixed. In some cases, they can't be fixed at all. That can be emotionally and mentally draining.

4. The job is complex.

Doctors have a ton of information to process. They have to know it, understand it, analyze it and draw conclusions from it. A mistake made at any point in the process -- by a worn-out medical professional -- can have dire results.

Doctors, of course, are still responsible for the mistakes they make. Those who are harmed need to know if they can seek financial compensation. It's important to understand what factors led to that mistake in the first place.
