Nursing home abuse and social media

One of the more troubling types of medical malpractice is nursing home abuse, as it targets those who may be defenseless and entirely dependent on their caregivers. In the age of social media and nearly constant photo sharing, nursing home abuse is sometimes practiced online.

For example, one worker took a video of a woman in a wheelchair. Workers were taunting and making fun of the woman, and someone pulled her hair. That video found its way to the public via Facebook.

Another worker took pictures of people living in nursing homes who were either partially or fully naked. These pictures were then shared with the worker's friends via Snapchat, an app that sends out the pictures and then deletes them after a time.

Pictures have also targeted residents who were doing things that were private, despite being common in the home, such as using the toilet or vomiting. In one case, a resident had an obstructed bowel, and staff members were assisting while another worker took and shared pictures of the process.

In some cases, those whose pictures were being taken had Alzheimer's and similar conditions that meant they did not know what was happening and couldn't have consented to it in any fashion. This has been viewed as a distinct violation of that person's rights.

These are just a few examples, but they help to show how problematic this type of behavior can be. Not only is the worker violating the resident's rights, but he or she is neglecting other residents in order to take the pictures or videos. When this happens to a loved one, be sure you know what legal options you have.
