Does health matter behind the wheel?

The reasons for car accidents are nearly endless. Some drivers are distracted, some vehicles are not well maintained, some drivers are under the influence and some simply make mistakes in a fast-paced, high-stress atmosphere.

One thing that it's wise not to overlook, though, is physical health. Drivers who aren't fit to get behind the wheel of a 4,000-pound vehicle can cause accidents and put others in danger.

Sometimes, health issues are simple. Someone may not be sleeping well. As the days go by, he or she starts to feel very worn down. Nodding off while driving can cause an accident in seconds.

Other times, the issues are more serious. Someone may suffer from a chronic issue, like severe headaches or seizures. If one strikes while the person is driving, the car could go out of control.

Even those who are just generally under the weather could increase the overall danger. A person's reaction times could go down since he or she is feeling groggy. A sick person could have trouble thinking quickly or making good decisions on the fly. When taking cold medicine or other drugs, these issues could become even more pronounced.

People must be aware of their health and how it can impact their ability to drive. Often, they'll just try to tough it out, but that's extremely risky and unfair to other drivers if it then causes an accident.

If you're hurt in one of these accidents, be sure you know what legal rights you may have to compensation, which could help with medical bills, lost wages and more.
