Doctors are conflicted over when to trust their gut

The world of medicine is largely based in science. It's not a place where a lot of doctors feel comfortable just "trusting their gut." They want to have some hard evidence to lean on.

However, this can be problematic. Doctors are around patients all day, every day. They know when things just feel wrong.

For example, one doctor said a child was brought to him with a temperature of 101 degrees. The doctor had a bad feeling about it, but he gave the child Tylenol and things appeared to improve, as if it was just a minor fever.

He couldn't shake the feeling that he should take the child aside and do lab tests, though. He had no solid reason to do it, but his gut told him to. In the end, he went against his gut, let the parents take the child home, and then found out later that the boy had meningitis. He wound up in the hospital.

One doctors said that trying to figure out what was wrong with any given patient was similar to putting puzzle pieces together. That doctor claimed that there were times when medical professionals would find a piece that did not appear to fit the puzzle. That's when they got the "gut feeling" that something was wrong.

Doctors have a lot to consider when trying to make a diagnosis and prescribe the right type of treatment. No matter how complex the case, though, patients always deserve the highest level of care. When they don't get it, especially through negligence, it's important for them to know all about their legal options.
