Bad driving may be in your genes

You know someone who is a bad driver. Maybe you've ridden with that person, and you've felt nervous. Maybe you've seen him or her get into car accidents, even minor ones, repeatedly. You have no idea how it can keep happening. Aren't they learning from their mistakes?

They may not be, and it may be hereditary.

A study found that there is a specific genetic variant that lowers the amount of a certain memory-aiding brain protein. When people with that variant were put through a driving test, they were 20 percent worse at driving than those without the variant -- and with more of the brain protein.

The head researcher said that the problem was two-fold. First off, people with the lower protein levels were simply more likely to make mistakes to start with. Second, after they did make those mistakes, they forgot more of the lessons they should have learned from the crash. This meant their skill did not increase as quickly in the wake of these crashes, and they were more likely to simply make the same mistakes again.

If you're wondering how likely it is that one of those genetically-inferior drivers will hit you, you should know that around 30 percent of people in the United States have the genetic variant. That means you're probably passing a fair amount of these people every time you pull out of your driveway.

When one of them crashes into you and you're injured, you may wind up facing high medical bills. Be sure you know if you have a right to financial compensation.
