4 tips for proper cellphone use on the road

Many studies have shown the dangers of using cellphones while driving. One said that a full 25 percent of car accidents were connected to cellphone use. It's clear that it's very dangerous, which is why laws banning the practice have been making their way across the United States.

To stay safe, keep these four tips in mind:

1. If you have to make a call, pull over.

It's not just texting and driving that is dangerous. There are times when emergency calls are necessary. If you need to make one, simply find a safe place to pull over, make your call, and then merge back into traffic.

2. Ignore incoming calls.

Nothing anyone has to say is worth your life. Ignore those incoming calls when you're behind the wheel. If you know you have to answer, pull over first.

3. Get directions before you leave.

With GPS technology, a lot of people hop on the phone not to call or text, but to get GPS directions or at least look at the map. That's fine, but do it before you leave, not while you're driving.

4. Check in with people when you arrive.

After you get to your destination, then you can check the phone. Maybe you need to send a text telling a parent, roommate, or significant other that you've arrived. If you do, just make sure you send it after you're there and the car is off.

Following these tips can help you, but you could still be hit by another distracted driver. If so, make sure you know your rights to compensation for pain and suffering, medical bills, and more.
