What objects do surgeons forget inside the body most often?

You get out of surgery, and you're in a lot of pain. You assume it's just the normal healing process at first, but the pain doesn't go away. You go back in and find out that the surgeon actually left a foreign object inside your body before stitching you back up.

Even though it sounds shocking, this happens year in and year out. Some of the most common items left behind are instruments used for surgery, such as scalpels, tweezers, clamps or scissors. You can imagine how detrimental this is for your body.

Other items that get left behind may not cause as much damage, but they can still cause a lot of issues and must be removed. They include things like towels, sponges and surgical gloves. In some cases, when tubes are used during surgery, they could also be left behind.

Experts do note that sponges are left behind frequently, making up a large percentage of these surgical mistakes. There are numerous reasons, from poor communication to poor counting by the surgical team, but part of the problem is simply that sponges may not even look like foreign objects. They often blend in after they've soaked up blood -- their intended role in surgery -- and doctors simply don't see them.

No matter what is left behind, you could be looking at days or weeks of pain and suffering, increased medical costs from a second procedure and increased healing times since you have to recover twice. As the costs mount, it may be wise to look into your rights to financial compensation.
