Tailgating is often not aggressive, but a habitual mistake

When you think of a tailgater, you probably think of some who is angry and impatient. He or she is riding right on your bumper, glaring at you with every passing mile, even though you're already going the speed limit. The tailgater is trying to push you to go even faster, and he or she probably flies by in a furious passing maneuver as soon as there's any room.

This absolutely happens, but some experts note that it's not always aggression that causes drivers to tailgate. In many cases, it's just a dangerous habit. They always drive far too close to the cars ahead of them, perhaps ignorant of the danger.

How could they be confused about how dangerous tailgating is? Part of the issue is that cars are generally traveling at the same speed. Drivers don't feel like they're getting any closer and this creates a false sense of safety. They're not thinking about what will happen if the car ahead has to brake suddenly.

Two cars going at the same speed on the open road can create an illusion, and people forget just how fast they're really traveling. They don't plan for the future and therefore don't drive carefully. After doing this for a long time and really turning it into a habit, they stop realizing how close they are or how risky it is.

Of course, tailgaters are very dangerous and can cause serious accidents with their irresponsible driving, even if they don't realize the mistake they're making until after the crash. When you're injured, it's crucial to know if you have a right to compensation for medical bills and other costs.
