Medical professionals need to speak up

One of the biggest risks to patients in medical settings is simply that other medical professionals may be nervous or reluctant to speak up when they notice that mistakes are being made. This was examined in a report call "Silence Kills." It looked at data spanning five years, and it was carried out by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). Their findings included:

1. A full 88 percent of physicians said that some of their co-workers exhibited poor judgement on the job.

2. A total of 84 percent also said they had watched as co-workers potentially put patients in danger by taking shortcuts.

3. Less than 10 percent then went on to voice their concerns and confront these colleagues. This included nurses, physicians, and other members of the clinical staff.

So, while the vast majority of medical professionals knew that dangerous procedures were taking place, a stark minority would do anything about it. While this is perhaps not as detrimental as making the mistakes in the first place, it absolutely puts patients at risk.

Some experts noted that fear of reprisal could play a role, as could disrespect. This could keep a nurse from speaking up when a senior surgical physician was clearly making a mistake, even when the nurse knew that it would be in the patient's best interests for him or her to say something.

Has unchecked negligence left you with injuries or given you improper medical care? If so, you may be able to seek compensation, and it's important to know all of the legal rights and options that you have.
