30 percent of hit and run accidents happen on the road

You may have heard that hit and run accidents are most common in parking lots. You get out of work, take the elevator down to the lot, and find out that someone smashed in the back end of your car and drove off during the day. You have no idea when it happened or who did it, unless the lot has a camera that caught the car and/or the license plate number.

It's true that these wrecks are more common, with a full 70 percent happening in parking lots, according to some studies. However, that still means that 30 percent of these accidents happen on the road, while the drivers who are hit are in their vehicles and in danger of being injured.

This, of course, is illegal. The police often track these drivers down and they can be charged with criminal activity. Leaving the scene of a car accident is not permitted under almost any circumstances, and there are penalties even for those who just damage vehicles.

Hit and run drivers who cause injuries or death could face even harsher sentences. In Florida, for instance, the Aaron Cohen Life Protection Act governs deadly crashes. It's been in place since 2014. The man for whom it was named was hit and killed in 2012, and the driver who ran got a mere two years behind bars -- even though alcohol impairment was involved. Now, under the new act, any driver who leaves the crash scene -- if he or she is convicted, of course, and if there was a fatality -- has to get at least four years in jail.

Those who have been injured or who have lost loved ones in hit-and-run accidents need to know their potential rights to compensation. They may be able to seek compensation on top of any criminal charges that the driver faces when he or she is eventually caught.
