There are various causes for a post-traumatic headache

If you're involved in a car accident and you then have a post-traumatic headache, it's important to note that there are a few different ways this can originate. Figuring out exactly what is causing it is the key to getting the right medical care.

For instance, you could have a cervicogenic headache. This means that it doesn't originate in your head at all, but in your neck. Your head can snap back and forth during the crash, putting significant strain on your neck and causing serious injuries.

You could also have a post-concussive headache. As the name implies, this simply means that you sustained a concussion -- a closed-head injury that occurs when the brain is pressed against the inside of your skull -- and the headache can linger as your brain heals.

The headache could also be connected to a muscle spasm or a muscle contraction. Your brain itself may not be injured at all, but the constant strain on the muscles is enough to cause lasting pain.

Finally, the headache could stem from a pinched nerve. The nerves that are impacted could be the upper cervical nerves, in the neck area, or the greater occipital nerve, which is found at the base of the skull.

These are serious injuries, not simple headaches that you get from daily stimulus. You may need significant medical care, and you may not be able to work, which is why it's important to know your rights to compensation.

However, experts warn that you may not even have the headache for hours, days, or weeks after the crash. Keep your legal rights in mind even if you initially believe you haven't been hurt.
