Projecting feelings can cause road rage

Road rage often happens because drivers make mistakes or at least drive in a fashion that isn't all that considerate of other drivers. For example, a driver who cuts someone off without using a blinker on the expressway could be the target of road rage.

However, some warn that projecting feelings from other areas of life is actually what makes road rage happen for many drivers. They're frustrated about other things -- an impending divorce, getting laid off at work, or something else of this nature -- and so they let it spill out on the highway.

For example, one woman said that she used to have a job she despised. She needed the paychecks, so she drove there every morning, and she said she was always in an angry mood to start with, because she didn't want to go to work. Whenever any little thing happened in traffic, she became irrationally angry.

Finally, she moved on to a new job, which she enjoyed. Suddenly, she found that she was able to let all of that little stuff go. She no longer started out in a bad mood or projected those feelings at other drivers. In some ways, though there were trigger events, the road rage was really connected to a general unhappiness with her life.

The next time you experience road rage and you can't understand how the other driver could be so angry behind the wheel, remember that there may be factors you'll never know about, which that driver may not even realize are contributing. That said, if he or she is driving recklessly and causes an accident, don't forget about your potential rights to compensation.
