Odds of death in a pedestrian crash swings at 45 MPH

The speed a car is traveling when it strikes a pedestrian has a massive impact on the odds that the pedestrian will be killed. Obviously, the faster the car is going, the greater the chances of death. However, it's interesting to dig into the numbers a bit further and see that the real swing happens at 45 miles per hour, when all age groups are more likely to be killed than to survive.

At just 20 miles per hour, most people will live. Those who are 70 years old will die in 13 percent of cases, those who are 30 will be killed in 3 percent, and the average is just 7 percent. It's highly more likely that anyone involved in a low-speed crash will live.

By 35 miles per hour, it's suddenly more likely that a person who is 70 will be killed, with fatalities happening in 54 percent of cases. The average is just 31 percent, though, and those who are 30 years old only pass away in 22 percent of the cases.

At 45 miles per hour, everything changes. Even 30-year-olds are killed in most cases, at 52 percent. The average clocks in at 60 percent. For those who are 70, the fatality rate is an astounding 83 percent.

When you're behind the wheel, driving 35 miles per hour instead of 45 miles per hour doesn't make much of a difference. Unless you're on a very long trip, you're looking at a change in driving time of just a few minutes. Those who are hit, though, would be far more likely to survive.

Have you been hit while crossing the street, suffering serious injuries because of a negligent driver? If so, you must know if you have a right to compensation.
