It's very important to be honest with your doctor

One of the first things they give you at the doctor's office is a checklist that you can fill out regarding your lifestyle and health issues. After you do it, the doctor is going to follow up with questions about both areas.

Do you lie when you're talking to the doctor? Studies have found that many patients do, and it's potentially quite problematic.

For example, people sometimes lie about how much they drink. They do this even though doctors generally say it's fine to have a drink or two each day, and there can even be health benefits. However, some people lie about how much they drink or how often they do it.

The reason could simply be embarrassment. A person may not want to admit there is a problem or may know that the three-to-four drinks a day has become an issue. But he or she will still talk about just drinking socially and infrequently.

Why is it a problem? As one medical health professional pointed out, it can mean that a doctor running a liver test will get unexpected results. This could lead the doctor to think there's another health issue altogether, when it's just the result of the alcohol. On top of that, patients take in a lot of calories when they drink, so they could gain unexplained weight. That could lead to other health problems.

In short, it's wise to be honest with your doctor. If the doctor still makes mistakes -- like the wrong diagnosis -- then you know you have at least done your part. You may even have a case against a negligent doctor.
