Infants are an incredible distraction in the car

When you think of distractions in the car, what do you think of first? Texting and driving? Talking on the phone? Trying to use the GPS?

All of these things are distracting, but one study found that having an infant in the car was perhaps the worst distraction of all. The majority of parents -- 60 percent -- said having an infant in the car while driving alone was "very distracting." Even more, a full 80 percent, were nervous that the crying child would cause a crash. For drivers between 20 and 29, one study found that young kids were a leading distraction.

One man wrote about his experience, saying that he tried to give his child a pacifier when he took her in the car, hoping it would calm her down. It rarely worked. Instead, she'd just throw it on the floor and scream.

When that happened, not only was the screaming a distraction, but he had to try to pick the pacifier up, clean it off -- often in his cup of coffee -- and give it back to her. This would happened repeatedly as he drove down the road.

As you can imagine, it was far harder to drive safely when listening to the crying child and trying to feel around on the floor for the pacifier. The father was only trying to help, but it put him and others in potential danger.

Those who have been injured in accidents caused by distracted drivers, even drivers who were just distracted by their own kids, may have a right to financial compensation.
