Do electronic records increase distraction for doctors?

The last thing you want, when you're talking to your doctor, is to feel like he or she is distracted. Your health is so important to you, and you need to know that your doctor is paying attention to you -- not the computer.

However, in the modern doctor's office, electronic health records are incredibly common. The government has handed out incentives and many doctors and hospitals have switched over to the electronic system. That means the doctor may spend more time looking at the screen than you like.

Some experts say it's a good thing. Electronic records help to make sure everyone is on the same page. Even if you meet with multiple doctors, nurses and specialists, you know that they all have the same information. That can, theoretically, reduce mistakes.

That doesn't mean it isn't a distraction, though. Experts say they think it will get better with time, as medical professionals get used to the new system, but it does mean the doctor has to spend some time paying attention to the computer. This could be a problem for medical professionals who don't use computers often outside of work, for whom the learning curve may be higher, making the electronic records feel like more of a burden.

As you can see, EHRs provide both advantages and disadvantages. While they can reduce mistakes from miscommunication, they could increase mistakes centered around distractions. If you are ever injured because of an obvious error made by a doctor, one that violates your right to high-level care, you may need to know if you can seek compensation.
