Why doctors feel too busy to listen

Patients sometimes run into a very disheartening problem: It seems like they just can't get their doctor to listen. They go over their symptoms and it feels like the doctor just doesn't have any time for them, instead choosing to rush through the appointment.

This is perhaps worst with complex issues, such as chronic disorders. Sometimes, patients feel like the doctors just send them off to a random specialist or push them on down the assembly line without really taking the time to understand what's going on.

There are a lot of reasons for this, but one is that some doctors are overwhelmed with everything else they have to do. A lot of these are non-clinical tasks -- dealing with paperwork and that sort of thing. They're necessary, but they also mean the doctors have a lot less time to actually practice medicine.

Doctors also complain about all of the bureaucracy that goes on and the way that regulations -- intended to help patients -- must be so closely followed. For instance, one doctor just needed to put in a simple order for oxygen. To write the letter, though, the doctor had to write it, fax it, make changes, fax it again and repeat this whole process many times until the wording was technically correct. Something that felt like it should have taken 10 minutes just dragged on and on.

When these types of issues crop up, doctors can be tired and stressed. That can lead to mistakes, it can make it so that they don't listen and it can impact the level of care a patient gets. If it leads to a serious medical error, like a failure to diagnose a significant issue, patients then need to know if they have a right to compensation. Busy as they are, doctors must provide adequate care.
