White cars may be safer, but data is sparse

When you're looking for safety features for your new car, you're probably thinking about airbags, lane departure warning systems, backup cameras, and the like. Should you also be thinking about the color?

Maybe. Data on this is quite sparse, and not many studies have been done. Some experts do reject the idea that the color of a car makes it safer -- or less safe -- than another vehicle.

That being said, one study did note that white cars were 10 percent safer, according to the data it used. That stat is for daytime driving, but the reasoning simply comes back to visibility. The study claimed it's harder to see a black car, for example, so more accidents may occur when drivers just don't see other vehicles. That happens less often with high-visibility colors like white.

Other experts don't deny that it plays a role, but they don't think it's that big. They said that daytime running lights only reduce the odds of an accident by 3 to 5 percent. The same reasoning -- increased visibility -- comes into play. If lights have a maximum 5 percent reduction, they say color could have a smaller impact.

That being said, white does tend to be one of the most popular car colors, year in and year out. Drivers may not choose it for safety, but that could be an added benefit.

Regardless of the color of your car or how visible it is to other drivers, you have a right to safety on the road and those drivers have an obligation to respect your rights. When negligence leads to an accident and violates those rights, you may then be able to seek compensation.
