Is it safe to use a smartwatch while you drive?

Hands-free is the way to go when it comes to in-car technology, reducing distraction and keeping drivers' eyes on the highway. With the rise of smartwatches, you may find yourself thinking that this new technology is the perfect way to enjoy some of the features of a smartphone while you drive.

The reality, though, is that these watches are a bit deceptive. Yes, you don't have to touch the screen to look at the watch, but that's only half of the problem. You still have to look down, taking your eyes off of the road. Experts warn that, while a smartwatch may feel safer, it's actually the opposite of a hands-free device.

One study even found that using a smartwatch could be more distracting and dangerous for drivers than pulling out a smartphone.

There are a few reasons for that, but one major one is that alerts on a watch are so demanding. With your phone, you may just leave it in your bag and toss it into the back seat, forgotten until you arrive at your destination. It may buzz or beep while you drive, but it's easier to ignore. With a watch, since it's pressed against your skin and so close to you at all times, you notice the alerts instantly and could be more tempted to check them, even when you're not safely pulled over and out of traffic.

Have you been hit by a driver who was looking down at a smartwatch and not paying attention to the road? Distraction causes a high percentage of accidents in Florida, even with laws against it -- like the texting and driving ban -- and you must know how to seek financial compensation.
