Is getting along with your doctor good for your health?

Your first thought when you look for a doctor isn't finding someone you like and get along with. You're probably more driven by things like proximity to your house and where you can use your health insurance.

However, it is important to get along with your doctor. Many studies have shown that there are significant health benefits.

For example, some people suffer from hypertension, which is blood pressure that is not yet considered "high," but that is higher than it should be. Some studies have found that these patients will actually have lower blood pressure when they have a good relationship with their doctors and communicate with them more effectively.

On top of that, getting along with the doctor makes it more likely that a diagnosis will be accurate. The two of you will have more of an open dialogue and information will be exchanged easily.

The heart of the matter comes back to communication. When you like your doctor -- and when he or she gets along with you -- communication is quick and more effective. This helps you ask the right questions, it helps the doctor gather information for more effective treatment, and it generally leads to better care. Patients who are communicating well with their doctors don't have as many complaints as those who aren't.

Experts do note that patients who have poor relationships with their doctors may be wise to look for a new office. While this could be in your best interests, remember that the same duty of care is owed to you, no matter how your doctor feels about you. When the care you get falls short of that mark, you may be able to seek compensation.
