Can the GPS actually cause accidents?

GPS systems have gone from a novelty to something many drivers use almost every day. For some, they're built into the dash, while others use the GPS apps on their smartphones. Overall, they've made paper maps obsolete and made it easier for people to navigate in areas they're not familiar with.

However, there are downsides. Some experts warn that distracted driving involves anything within the car -- talking to friends, texting on a smartphone, eating a hamburger -- that takes the driver's eyes away from the road. Using a GPS system fits this definition, and it's especially problematic when drivers are trying to put in the new address while they drive. This can be as dangerous as texting and driving.

These distractions can be avoided or at least reduced if you:

-- Put the route in before pulling out of the driveway.

-- Read over the route before starting the trip so that they know, in a more general sense, where they're going. This prepares them and removes the element of surprise.

-- Use voice commands so that they don't actually have to look at the screen. Depending on the GPS system, voice commands may be used both to program the device and to be given driving instructions.

On the whole, GPS systems have been helpful. Like most technology, though, they also come with downsides. If you've been injured by a driver who was distracted or driving illegally thanks to the GPS, you may be able to seek compensation to cover your medical costs, wages you lost while you couldn't work, and other such expenses.
